Questions & Replies

To encourage transparency and accountability, I will post here the reasonable questions about the City of Red Deer that I receive and can answer. Often, these are simply comments I’ve read and replied to on Facebook. You’re welcome to share the responses I’ve posted here—since they’re already publicly available—but please be courteous and cite this page as the source, including the website in your repost. Thank you!

Food bank use and 'expired' food...

My response: If that’s the case, then the Food Bank needs to do better. I know someone who volunteers at one, and he mentioned that they purposely keep certain stock levels lower to avoid waste from expired goods. They often have a large volume of food but very limited time to sort through it all. On top of that, most food banks rely on undertrained volunteers—many of whom are struggling themselves—who are just trying their best. But even so, food banks should know better than to hand out expired food.

What really bothers me is when people dismiss criticism by saying, “Well, you wouldn’t understand unless you’ve been through it yourself" or "Seems you know nothing about living on hard times.” That’s a condescending assumption that adds nothing to the discussion.

Millions of Canadians have faced food insecurity—you’re not unique in that.

Personally, I chose not to use a food bank, instead cutting down to maybe one meal a day, because I felt there were families in greater need. But that doesn’t mean I (or many others here) don’t know first-hand what it’s like to go without proper meals—not just for a day, but for weeks or even months.

And one more thing—stop hiding behind “Anonymous participant” just to take shots at people. It's okay to bring up concerns that you feel should be addressed, like expired food, but making assumptions and attacking ones' character, while hiding behind a cloak of anonymity, isn't productive at all. Do better.
