Questions & Replies

To encourage transparency and accountability, I will post here the reasonable questions about the City of Red Deer that I receive and can answer. Often, these are simply comments I’ve read and replied to on Facebook. You’re welcome to share the responses I’ve posted here—since they’re already publicly available—but please be courteous and cite this page as the source, including the website in your repost. Thank you!

Complaint about flies & garbage pickup on FB

My reply:

"The City of Red Deer uses a cart system where residential garbage (Black Carts) is picked up every two weeks on alternating weeks from recycling (Blue Carts), and organics (Green Carts) are collected weekly from early April to mid-November and every other week during the winter months."

Since ratepayers pay for garbage pickup (in addition to taxes, water, and sewer charges) I have my doubts they want to pay even more because of some compost that hasn't been picked up yet.

"In Red Deer, the monthly cost for residential garbage pickup varies by cart size, with rates for April 1, 2025, being $16.30 for a 120L cart, $21.05 for a 240L cart, and $28.30 for a 360L cart. These are a $5.20 per month decrease from previous rates, and a $57.10 fee may be charged for changing your cart size."

If flies are being attracted, it means the garbage hasn’t been properly secured inside the bin. Residents are responsible for ensuring their waste is properly contained.

Our dumpster for our apartment building is picked up twice per week but that's what the owners (tenants) pay for so that's what they get. I think they pay about $200-300 per month for garbage only.

note: "Weekly (vs biweekly) pickups would cost every resident an additional $200-335*+ per year. Don't you pay enough taxes already?"
