2. Do you have a clear and actionable plan to address the issues of homelessness and rising crime in our city?

Yes, as I mentioned at the Firefighters Forum — take this action plan (Chamber noted below) and act on it. The City needs to stay at arm’s length when it comes to addressing homelessness and addiction. We shouldn’t be wasting taxpayer dollars trying to do what others are already better equipped to handle. There are many qualified and experienced organizations out there that should be working together under one umbrella — a single coordinated society — that comes to the City only with a clear, unified plan forward.

Keeping our city safe and well-built starts with being visible, proactive, and smart with resources. I want more foot patrols by Peace Officers downtown, better lighting, and a volunteer “downtown ambassador” program to deter petty crime and make residents feel safer. With the RCMP contract ending in 2032, we can create a Red Deer Municipal Police force, letting RCMP and Alberta Sheriffs (SCAN) focus on organized crime and drug sources instead of smaller offenses. At the same time, partnering with third-party organizations for non-core services like tourism, culture, and economic development keeps taxpayer money focused on core services like public safety and infrastructure. By combining prevention, presence, and smart partnerships, we can build a safer, stronger, and more vibrant community for everyone.

My Position

I want to be clear with Red Deerians: my position on safe-injection, harm-reduction, or overdose-prevention programs has not changed. While these programs may have prevented some overdoses—481 in Red Deer over 6.5 years—they do not successfully address or prevent the core issue: drug use itself. For that reason, I do not support continuing them.

My vision is different. My campaign and my Cannery Row project focus on Reduction, Rehabilitation, Recovery, and Reintegration—helping people who want to break free from addiction, supporting the homeless who want off the streets, and assisting those working to rebuild their lives.

After hearing various arguments—too often based on fear or weak evidence—I have decided that taxpayer money in Red Deer should not support programs that enable continued drug use. If private organizations wish to fund such services, that is their choice, but public funds and facilities should focus on real solutions that address the root problem and help people recover.

I welcome open and reasonable discussion on any issue, provided it is supported by credible evidence and conducted with respect. What I will not engage in are circular arguments, personal attacks, or unproductive exchanges that do nothing to move our community forward. My focus remains on the future of our city and the decisions that will best serve our residents.

From a policy perspective, if a program or service has been tried and has demonstrably failed, there is no justification for continuing to commit public resources to it. Red Deer must prioritize initiatives that deliver measurable results, not repeat approaches that have proven ineffective. For example, so-called safe injection, harm reduction, and overdose prevention sites have not reduced drug addiction or improved community outcomes in our city. We should be investing in strategies that address the root causes of addiction and support long-term recovery, rather than continuing with programs that enable the problem without solving it.
