There is the idea that you should, every day at the start of your day, verbalize three things that you are grateful for. It seems like an easy thing to do but how can you begin the day with gratitude when nothing new has happened to you yet. I found myself making it through about a week before I started repeating things I was grateful and defeating the purpose of the exercise. I abandoned it about two months ago.
A good friend of mine told me about the idea of a gratitude jar today and I have decided to give it a try. In the case of her friend she adds a note to the jar each day with the intention of reading them all at the end of the year as a sort of reflection of self.
“Take a jar that will be called your 'gratitude jar'. Each week I write down all the great things that happened to me during the seven days. The intention is to read them all at the end of the year.”
I am going to do mine a little differently. I will write them down daily, as she does, but instead of waiting til the end of the year I will open the jar at the end of each week. After reflecting on my week, I am going to write about it in a blog post based on the positive gratitude I felt during the week.
