When I was in Calgary the other day there was a woman, maybe in her 30s begging for change outside the convenience store. I looked for a second in her hat and she had about 30 cents. I took out a $20 bill and put it in it. She thanked me, I actually thought she would start to cry... and I walked on into the store to buy my junk food. While I was in the store she went by to use the washrooms and on the way out she mouthed a 'thank you' to me again. You know, it was only $20 and who knows she might have used it on drugs... or she might have gone home to feed her kids... who knows, it was a lousy $20 that for at least one minute she felt noticed. I didn't really think of it at the time, and of course I'd do it again... you never know, $20 could change a persons life.
